 GIACOMO MATTE-TRUCCO
An engineer and
manager of great ability, Matté-Trucco was among the firstin Italy to use reinforced concrete. A close collaborator of one of the most important personalities of Italian capitalism, Giovanni Agnelli, the founder of FIAT, his name remains totally identified with the FIAT company, for which he designed (amongst other building) the Lingotto production building, identified by Le Corbusier in “Vers une Architecture” as one of the benchmarks of modern technology. |

Fabbrica FIAT del Lingotto (1916-1926) ra
"Il Lingotto Fiat è stata la prima invenzione costruttiva futurista", si afferma perentoriamente nel Manifesto Futurista dell'architettura aerea.
L'ingegnere Mattè-Trucco non era futurista: tuttavia tale complesso, per la centralità funzionale data alla 'macchina' - così spinta da determinare la trasformazione della copertura in pista automobilistica - e per il risalto dato alla nuova tecnologia del cemento armato, indubbiamente si salda strettamente con la tematica architettonica del Movimento.
The Futurist Manifesto of Aerial Architecture declared peremptorily that the "Fiat Lingotto was the first built invention of Futurism”.
Mattè-Trucco was an engineer, not a Futurist: nevertheless the Lingotto, thanks to the central role attributed to the Machine, pushed transformation of the roof to such an extreme that it became an automobile testing circuit.
The emphasis it gave to the new technology of reinforced concrete undoubtedly did have close connections with the architectural themes of Futurism.
