La città futurista nelle sue varie
forme proposte dagli architetti italiani rimase allo stadio di profezia e progetto. |
The futurist city in its different
conformations proposed by the Italian architects, remained as a prophecy or a mere
project. In Italy the rationalism had the best fortune and it became the official art of the fascism. In spite of it, European architects showed a strong interest in futurism. Theo Van Doesburg and other partisans of De Stijl wrote a lot of articles with a sincere estimation for the town-planning proposal of Sant’Elia. He was acclaimed as the first architect to have studied truly innovative proposals for the circulation problem in the big cities. Le Corbusier adopted, for the “citè d’affairs”
of his plan for Algiers, buildings made in tensistruttura, a new system created by
the futurist Fiorini. As a witness of this relationship there is the correspondence between the two architects. The matter of the relationship between Italian futurism and Russian constructivism is whereas very debated and it’s difficult to find one’s way among conflicting critical affirmations. The only constructivist who could have known the Italian futurism was Moisei Jakovlevic Ginzburg, who took a degree in Milan in 1914. The knowledge of the Sant’Elia exhibited drawings could have influenced his projects. Someone also saw a likeness between Sant’Elia’s works and Jackov Chernikov’s 101 architectural imaginations of 1933. Other futurist influences on European architecture are seen by the critics in the works of Mart Stam, Walter Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, Auguste Perret and Robert Mallet-Stevens. The American inventor Richard Buckminster Fuller carries out the futurist projects in his plans for houses and means of transportation. Although he never knew the Marinetti’s movement, he put into practice Sant’Elia’s ideas and those written in the different manifestos of the futurist architecture. Fuller, in fact, used new building materials, mobile homes, building edified with tensistruttura, aerodynamic cars and big step houses. Besides, in his written he adopted a poetical, evocative style, made of brief periods like a prophecy, likewise the Italian manifestos that described the houses and the city of the future. We can link to the futurism a great number of drawings, utopias and megastructures created in a century of architectural projects and town planning for the metropolis of tomorrow. ![]() |
